Ministerial Order determining Funeral Expenses and Death Allowances for an Employee

Article One – Purpose of this Order
This Order determines the funeral expenses and death allowances for an employee. It also determines modalities for their payment.Article 2 – Amount of funeral expenses
Without prejudice to allowances paid by the institution in charge of social security in Rwanda, when the employee dies while still in service, an employer grants to the deceased employee’s family funeral expenses equal to the deceased employee’s monthly gross salary.However, funeral expenses granted to the deceased employee’s family cannot be less than two hundred thousand Rwandan francs (FRW 200,000).Article 3 – Amount of death allowances
In case an employee dies while still in service, his or her spouse or his or her heir is granted death allowances equivalent to three (3) times the last monthly gross salary of the deceased employee.However, death allowances referred to in Paragraph One of this Article may be disbursed to any other person decided by authorities of the Sector of residence of the deceased person, in case the latter does not have any successor.Article 4 – Time for disbursement of funeral expenses and death allowances
Funeral expenses and death allowances are provided before the funeral ceremonies.However, if persons authorised to receive the death allowances referred to in Article 3 of this Order are not immediately available or if there is any other reason that may delay the disbursement of death allowances, death allowances are disbursed within thirty (30) days from the date of death of the employee.Article 5 – Repealing provision
Ministerial Order n° 01 of 02/07/2010 fixing the period and modalities for payment and amount to be paid for funeral indemnities and all prior provisions contrary to this Order are repealed.Article 6 – Commencement
This Order comes into force on the date of its publication in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Rwanda.History of this document
